Should I Get Wireless?

Is wireless right for you? Well, this article is designed to help you decide. There are several different types of internet networks in Aotearoa. Most people are connected to the fibre network, as it is the fastest and most reliable option. However, fibre isn’t available everywhere. There are some rural communities who do not have access to fibre, and therefore, need to choose another option to get connected. A lot of people opt for wireless. So, let’s dive into the facts.

What is Wireless?

Fixed wireless is a type of internet network available in New Zealand. It works differently to fibre, using radio waves emitted by cell towers rather than cables underground to transmit data. When the cell towers emit the radio waves at a particular frequency into the surrounding area, the modem in your home or business can pick up on this signal and then transmit data back and forth.

What are the Benefits?

  • Fast speeds - great for basic video streaming.
  • Low latency - improved video calling experience.
  • Higher bandwidth than copper and VDSL.

What are the Drawbacks?

  • Coverage can be limited depending on the location of the cell towers. It can be disrupted by trees and buildings.
  • Works best when there are only a few devices connected at the same time.

Pros and Cons of Wireless

Who is Wireless Best Suited For?

Wireless is a great option for households where fibre isn’t available. If you live rurally, it’s definitely a great option to consider.

Wireless broadband is best suited for small to medium sized households who don’t have a lot of devices connected to the internet at the same time. If you use the internet for “simpler” activities such as social media, online banking and shopping, email, and basic video streaming and calling, with only a few devices connected at the same time, you’d be a good candidate for wireless. Just bear in mind, that if you want to enjoy the best quality HD video streaming on a cosy Friday night, it’s best to only have one device connected to the internet to ensure no buffering or frustrating interruptions.
